He came in so matted he couldn’t see, covered in fleas and left behind.
Thirty-five days later, he was accepted into
K9s For Camo
to train as a service dog for a veteran. This is his transformation.
Drag the slider to see what pounds of matting were hiding — and the dog
underneath who could finally see, move and breathe freely again.
Severe matting pulls on the skin, traps fleas and dirt, and can hide
injuries. When a coat is this far gone, a vet and sedation are the kindest
way through it — exactly what Brandon recommended.

A last-minute appointment
Dapper came in for a last-minute appointment. The moment he walked through the door, our groomer Brandon knew this wasn’t a normal situation. His coat was so badly matted he couldn’t see through it. He was covered in fleas, in pain, and too frightened to let anyone near him.
Brandon recommended a vet and sedation. The people who brought him in refused to come back for him.

Someone who stayed
Summer Gerhardt — owner of Dapper Doodle Grooming and Howliday Pet Resort — sat with him and slowly earned enough trust for him to let her pet him. Then Rescue One stepped in. Summer took him to the clinic, where he had a little nap and the team removed pounds of matting.
He walked out with a new name, a new cut, a new foster and a new future. Meet Dapper.
“I know you don’t know it yet, but your life just got so much better.”— Summer Gerhardt
With Summer, he stays close — head in her lap, sometimes tucked behind her legs. Other dogs? No hesitation at all. His skin is clearing up, with surgery planned to neuter him and repair an eyelid that had pulled away under the weight of the matting on his face.
For a rescue dog, healing looks like small things: letting someone new sit nearby, choosing to play instead of hide. Dapper was doing all of it. It’s slow. It’s supposed to be. And K9s For Camo was already part of his story.
Some dogs tolerate the salon. Dapper is learning to love it. Fresh cut, big smile, and playful as ever — trusting us a little more each day.

Full room. One toy. Zero interest in either. When Dapper picks a person, he picks them all the way — right up against the legs, head tucked in, not going anywhere.
October 15
Service dog in the making
His coat is growing back, and he’s acting like he knows it. Bigger news: Dapper has been accepted into the K9s For Camo program. By October 17 he had begun training to become a service dog for a veteran.
Leaving him for training wasn’t easy for Summer. He arrived needing people he could trust. Now those people are helping him prepare to support someone else.
